Driving, as it turns out, makes a lot of people angry. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, overly aggressive driving is one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities in the United States.
In other words, if you constantly find yourself getting angry at all the stupid, thoughtless drivers around you, you’re not alone. Though it’s easy to get mad at some of the senseless driving that goes on—cars, after all, can be dangerous weapons—it’s important to try and keep your cool as much as possible.
Here are some important tips to keep the anger and aggression under control while you’re driving:
- Give yourself some extra time to get to work in the morning. It may seem hard with all the stuff you have to do, but giving yourself just five extra minutes to get where you’re going can help you stay calm in the event of an unforeseen delay, such as a traffic jam.
- Listen to relaxing music during the commute. Try to avoid music that makes you feel especially angry or aggressive—instead listen to something light or funny that will help you stay calm in spite of whatever is going on around you.
- Get more sleep. Have you ever noticed that you get more irritable when you’re tired? Trying to develop healthy sleeping habits can help you feel better, and decrease your feelings of anger or frustration while on the road.
- Don’t try to “pay” bad drivers back. After somebody does something reckless and rude, you may feel compelled to “get them back” by doing something equally reckless to them. However, this sort of escalation is extremely dangerous, and it’s far better to just shrug it off.
There are a lot of bad drivers on the road—people who flaunt the rules, and who don’t seem to have any consideration for anyone else on the road. However, responding aggressively to their rudeness often only makes the situation more dangerous. Controlling your own aggression on the road can significantly reduce your risk of an auto accident.
