How to Drive to Survive

By taking measures to stay out of an accident in the first place, you can prepare – rather than repair – your car. First, take the appropriate maintenance steps to ensure your car is running in tip-top shape. Secondly – and even more importantly – drive in a defensive manner. This helps you stay out of a wreck no matter what anyone else on the road may do. Just in case you may have forgotten from your Driver’s Ed days, here’s a quick refresher on the techniques that will likely keep you out of an accident:

  1. Don’t drive sleepy: Drowsy drivers cause 56,000 crashes annually. Most of these crashes involve a car running off of the roadside early in the morning. Remember: sleepy drivers can be just as dangerous as drunk ones.
  2. Don’t drive distracted: talking on cellphones, texting, shaving, applying makeup, and reading are all major culprits. About 20% of crashes include some kind of distraction as a factor. If you just can’t wait to respond to that text, be smart: pull over to the side of the road.
  3. Be on the lookout: a driver’s eyes should move about every two seconds. It’s important to do more than just stare at the road passing in front of you. Check your blind spots and rear-view mirrors on a regular basis to make sure that your safety is never compromised.

Sometimes, despite your careful driving, accidents happen. When they do, remember to call your Utah auto body experts.
